A court in Sweden has issued fines to Greenpeace protestors nabbed after entering nuclear plant grounds.

A year ago, protestors scaled fences with ladders and rode bicycles onto the property of Vattenfall's Ringhals and Forsmark power plants. Reports at the time put the number of protestors entering the outer grounds of Ringhals at about 20, while about 40 were arrested at Forsmark. At that plant, police said nine made it past the outermost barrier. Two hid on plant grounds for two days.

On Thursday, a court fined nine of the protestors for trespassing. The Local, a Swedish news website, reported that they each were fined between $775 to $3,875, which a lawyer for the defendants said was at the low end of possible sentences.

The Local noted that Vattenfall personnel made the decision not to use more intensive tactics to remove the protestors because they considered them harmless. No protestor was reported to have entered buildings relevant to reactor operations.
