Smoke reported in an elevator at the Seabrook nuclear power
plant was quickly handled by a fire crew Monday.
A plant spokesman told the Associated Press that someone
noticed spoke coming from a nearby transformer just before noon. No one was in
the elevator, and firefighters disconnected the power to resolve the issue.
Plant operation and safety were not compromised.
Because the event lasted longer than 15 minutes, the
smoke is considered an unusual event, and plant operator FPL Energy Seabrook is
required to report it to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The plant is located 13 miles south of Portsmouth, N.H. It features
a single 1295 megawatt pressurized water reactor first licensed in 1990,
according to the NRC.
