SMR, LLC, a subsidiary of Holtec International, has awarded a contract to the Shaw Group Inc. to provide phase one engineering support services for a new 140-megawatt small modular nuclear power reactor, the Holtec Inherently Safe Modular Underground Reactor (HI-SMUR).
Shaw will develop the conceptual design of the balance of plant and support systems to advance the HI-SMUR toward eventual commercial application. Shaw also will prepare an overall design basis, support licensing activities and evaluate plant layouts and optimization of plant output.
"As the demand for clean, safe commercial nuclear energy continues to grow, Shaw is poised to serve this dynamic industry with our expertise in multiple areas, including detailed design, procurement, construction, startup and commissioning, and now as an industry architect-engineer for a small modular reactor program,” said J.M. Bernhard Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of Shaw. “In addition, Shaw’s capability to fabricate power plant modules will be especially important to the implementation program for small module reactors."
Shaw also provides design services for facilities using Holtec’s spent fuel casks at nuclear operating plants in the United States. When completed, these independent spent fuel storage facilities allow nuclear plant operators to continue operations by storing spent fuel onsite in air-cooled casks and not in fuel pools.
