Two prominent members of America’s nuclear industry will
join Toshiba in efforts to stabilize and remediate accidents at Japan’s
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Toshiba has been working closely with a number of Japanese
companies to restore power and offer expertise to the plant that has suffered
multiple reactor crises following a magnitude 9 earthquake March 11. At the
request of the Japanese government and plant owner Tokyo Electric Power Co.,
Toshiba has provided more than 100 engineers to assist at Fukushima Daiichi and
nearby Fukushima Daini, according to a company release. Further, Toshiba formed
a task force of 700 engineers at the company’s Tokyo headquarters and other
facilities to monitor the situation and develop solutions. The company also
formed a 150-person task force on restoring thermal power capacity and fixing
transmission networks.
The Shaw Group will assist in Toshiba’s efforts at Fukushima
Daiichi, the American company announced Tuesday. The companies have worked
together on other projects since 2006, and a Shaw release said it will help
with mitigation, remediation and recovery services at the plant. A team of
experts from the company’s Power and Environmental Infrastructure Groups is
preparing to travel to Japan, as well as offer engineering, analysis and design
from the U.S.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Babcock & Wilcox also announced
Tuesday that it is in discussions with Toshiba to offer technical assistance
and services to maintain safety at Fukushima Daiichi. The exact scope of work
has not yet been defined.
