Rolls-Royce will upgrade computer systems at the Comanche Peak nuclear plant in Texas, the company announced Thursday.
Under the $13.7 million contract, the British company will replace plant process computers that monitor reactor operations, set alarms and compile critical data from plant instrumentation on temperature, pressure and valve positions.
"The current computer systems were installed in the 1990s, and while they have produced many years of reliable service, they are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain due to a lot of the parts no longer being available," Rolls-Royce's head of plant automation and monitoring systems Dave Thompson said in a release.
The contract will cover systems for both reactors at the Luminant-operated facility near Fort Worth, Texas, as well as a plant training simulator. According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Comanche peak uses two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors licensed in the early 1990s. Together, they generate about 2,300 megawatts.
