Rolls-Royce has completed delivery of an automated system for handling nuclear fuel at Canada’s Chalk River site.
The company announced delivery of the final components to the Ontario lab on Wednesday. The system will allow Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. to remove radioactive fuel and move it to a new storage facility.
"All of us at AECL are proud to work in collaboration with companies like Rolls-Royce and its many supply chain partners. Their work in designing and manufacturing sophisticated, automated systems for AECL and the rest of the Canadian nuclear industry is testament to Rolls-Royce and the high quality supply chain we have here in Ontario to support our work," AECL President Bob Walker said in a release.
A research reactor at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories saw the first controlled nuclear reaction outside the United States in 1945, according to AECL. Since then, the site has hosted a number of research reactors for civilian power research and medical isotope production.
