Inspections during a refueling outage turned up small flaws in the reactor pressure vessel head of South Carolina Electric and Gas' Summer nuclear plant, the company reported Friday.

In a document filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, unit 1 indicated that three of the RPV head's 66 penetrations did not meet federal standards. They will be repaired before the reactor is returned to service. Volumetric and visual inspections confirmed the flaws are not through-wall.

The unit is a Westinghouse three-loop pressurized water reactor. First licensed in 1982, it generates 966 megawatts about 25 miles northwest of Columbia, S.C. The plant is also the site of two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors currently under construction.
