A top-level role for a nuclear safety
expert has been created at Vattenfall, following the two chief
recommendations of a report on the shortcomings in safety work and
safety culture which were exposed after the events at Forsmark last year.
The chief nuclear officer would be the most senior controller of
nuclear safety issues of the Vattenfall group, which operates nuclear
plants in Sweden and Germany, but would not take actual operating
responsibility. The executive would report directly to Vattenfall
President and CEO, Lars Josefsson, who said, "I am not satisfied with
Vattenfall meeting international standards; we shall take the lead in
jointly setting them." The company said it would also 'participare more
actively in international nuclear organisations to ensure that the
collective global experience is being utilized for the group security
work'. The new chief nuclear officer would also report to a new Group
Nuclear Security Council, chaired by Josefsson.
