Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems announced the official opening of its new office in Charlotte, N.C., Tuesday as company leadership predicted further hiring in the years to come.

Covering an event whose timing coincided with the Nuclear Energy Assembly, the Charlotte Business Journal reported that Mitsubishi Nuclear CEO Kiyoshi Yamauchi anticipates as many as 150 jobs at the site, which would be 15 more than the company projected when announcing the office last year. About 100 have already been hired.

Last May the company announced it would establish an engineering center in Charlotte to expand the company’s U.S. business building new nuclear plants and selling replacement components for existing plants. According to a Mitsubishi Nuclear release, the company planned to make $4.1 million in capital investment in the region over the following five years.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is seeking Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval for its US-APWR generation III+ reactor design. According to an NRC schedule, the agency anticipates a final rulemaking in 2014.
