On Friday, the prime ministers of Japan and Turkey announced a contract to build Turkey's second nuclear plant at Sinop.

Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Japan's Shinzo Abe signed a $22 billion contract for Areva and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to build four, generation III Atmea pressurized water reactors at Sinop on the Black Sea, Turkey's state-run Anatolia News Agency reported. GDF Suez will head their operation when the reactors come online between 2023 and 2028.

At various points, Candu, Korea Electric Power Co., Toshiba and Areva were also under consideration for the contract. Rosatom was selected to build Turkey's first four power reactors at Akkuyu, which are expected to come online between 2020 and 2023, according to the World Nuclear Association.

Friday's announcement also suggested MHI and Areva would be involved in the country's third plant, planned for an undetermined site after 2023. Reuters reported the companies will take responsibility for the ground studies of the third plant.
