Yukiya Amano has been appointed to a second term as director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. If his appointment by the organization's board of governors is approved at the IAEA's general conference in September, his term will extend through November of 2017.

The IAEA announced the reappointment Wednesday. Amano took the position in 2009 after four years as Japan's resident representative to the agency. His tenure as director general has been marked by a resurgence in worldwide reactor construction, as well as the IAEA's response to the Fukushima Daiichi accidents and proliferation concerns in Iran.

A law graduate of Tokyo University, Amano's background is in diplomacy. He worked in a number of posts abroad for Japan's foreign ministry and has contributed to several Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty review conferences, according to his IAEA biography.
