U.S. shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls announced last week that it purchased Colorado-based engineering firm S.M. Stoller Corp. to help diversify its business into Department of Energy and commercial nuclear markets.

Stoller will operate as a fully owned subsidiary within the larger company's Newport News Shipbuilding division, according to a Huntington Ingalls release Thursday. The purchase price was not announced.

Based in suburban Denver, Stoller has provided commercial nuclear plants with technical services related to operations and the nuclear fuel cycle since 1959. It was involved in the DOE's Rocky Flats cleanup project in the 1980s and has since held a number of other site assessment and remediation contracts. According to its website, the company operates from 20 offices in the U.S., including its Broomfield, Colo., headquarters.
