A small leak occurred within a building at the Gentilly 2 nuclear plant last week, Canadian regulators said Wednesday.

On April 26, province-owned Hydro Quebec reported to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission that the heavy water coolant leaked into the plant’s reactor building. According to a CNSC release, two workers received small doses of 0.02 millisievert and 0.03 millisievert. Radiation released into the environment was below regulatory limits and did not pose a risk to the public, the agency said.

No further details were available, but the plant is required to submit a report on the incident next month.

Gentilly is Quebec’s only commercial nuclear plant. Put into service in 1983, it uses a Candu-6 heavy water reactor that generates 635 megawatts, according to the Candu Owners Group.
