Nuclear industry services provider GSE Systems Inc. said it had completed installation of training simulator upgrades for Units 2 and 3 of the Bruce A Generating Station in Ontario, Canada.

GSE said the new models for the facility on the shores of Lake Huron included replacement of the primary heat transport and boiler systems with training models that aim to provide accurate, real-time data on plant operations across the board. The previous reactor core model was upgraded to provide multi-group simulation options for operators and instructors also in real time.

The sub-channel thermohydraulic model was replaced with a two-phase fluid model for each fuel bundle and the calandria, maintenance cooling, feed and bleed, main feedwater, PHT pump seals and annular gas systems were replaced.

GSE also performed a run-through of the new systems and helped design new training scenarios.

The project was GSE's first simulator upgrade for a Canada deuterium uranium (or CANDU) reactor.

“The new simulators enable our operators to train in new scenarios that did not exist prior to the upgrade,” said Cynthia Mercanti, Section Manager of Simulator Support for Bruce Power.
