On the heels of a similar milestone at V.C. Summer, Plant Vogtle recently completed the concrete basemat for the first of its new AP1000 reactors.

The 7,000-cubic-yard concrete pour at unit 3 took 41 hours and was completed late last week, according to a Southern Co. release.

"This historic moment marks yet another important milestone of the Vogtle expansion project and reflects the tremendous progress we've made at the site," said Georgia Power's vice president for nuclear development, Buzz Miller. "We are very proud of this accomplishment and of all the hard work and collaboration that went into making it happen. This was a team effort that included Georgia Power, Southern Nuclear, CB&I, Westinghouse Electric Company and our co-owners – Oglethorpe Power Corp., the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities."

Crews at the Georgia site have also been welding together the unit 3 containment vessel, with some components staged for installation once the concrete cures. These include the CR10 cradle and the vessel's bottom head. The Westinghouse reactor is scheduled for completion in 2017, with unit 4 coming online the following year.
