The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently purchased 38 acres from the Connecticut Yankee to expand a national refuge.

The nuclear plant south of Hartford shut down in 1996. While its spent fuel remains stored at the Haddam Neck site, all of its other facilities have been leveled, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

In a release Tuesday, FWS said the purchased parcel will bring the total size of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge Salmon River Division to 416 acres. The added land was never used for plant or spent fuel storage operations.

The New Haven Register reported that the sale price was $900,000 and that the 544-acre plant acquired the land in 2000.
