A safety system erroneously tripped unit 3 at New York's Indian Point nuclear plant Wednesday.

The reactor shut down automatically at 11:57 a.m., according to an Entergy release. Safety systems initiated the trip because of a false signal indicating a change in reactor coolant system pressure. The cause is under investigation. Indian Point 2 was unaffected and continued to operate at full power.

Together, the units north of New York City generate about 2,000 megawatts. Both are Westinghouse four-loop pressurized water reactors that entered service in the mid-1970s.
