International engineering firm Atkins said it had been awarded a Tokyo Electric Power Company contract to assess fire hazards at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan.

The company will prepare a Fire Hazards Analysis for the entire Fukushima Daiichi site, “which will involve a thorough review of plant documentation and on-site inspections to identify fire hazards, determine consequences in relation to site nuclear safety goals and radioactivity release to the environment,” the company said.

The company will then provide recommendations for fire prevention, fire detection, fire suppression and fire containment.

Atkins said its own software package, the Graphical Logic and Analysis Support Software (GLASS) would help make critical decisions about the safety of the plant by improving speed, accuracy and transparency of data. Atkins said the process was a step forward compared to paper-based analysis systems.
