Utah-headquartered EnergySolutions has filed a court challenge to a recent decision awarding management of UK nuclear sites to another company.
The Financial Times and other British media reported Sunday that EnergySolutions filed a high-court writ seeking damages from the country's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, alleging the scoring system for the contract was flawed and that the NDA failed to follow its own procedures. The suit involves a 14-year contract worth $11.7 billion to take control of Magnox Ltd. and Research Sites Restoration Ltd. Those entities manage the decommissioning of 10 commercial Magnox nuclear plants and the cleanup of research centers at Harwell and Winfrith.
Cavendish Fluor Partnership, led by Fluor and UK-based Babcock International, was awarded the contract based, in part, on its claims of $1.6 billion in savings compared to the earlier contract held by EnergySolutions. Bechtel partnered with EnergySolutions in competing for the recent contract but has not joined the legal challenge.
