EDF will also involve industrial concerns, notably GDF-Suez

 – By April Murelio –

The announcement by the French President confirming the construction of a second EPR run by EDF is excellent news for the company.  EDF will also involve industrial concerns, notably GDF-Suez, in the construction of this second French EPR, in the form of balanced partnerships, as it did in the past with Electrabel in the Chooz and Tricastin power stations and more recently, Enel in the coming Flamanville EPR nuclear reactor.

In the words of Pierre Gadonneix, EDF’s Chairman and CEO, “This endorsement supports the Group’s long-term industrial strategy to develop CO2-free production resources, particularly nuclear. It is also excellent news for the whole of the nuclear industry and for employment in France. The construction of a second EPR driven by EDF will enhance security of supply in France and in Europe in the years to come, in a context of rising demand.”

The Penly site in Seine-Maritime has all the technical characteristics required for a new reactor using EPR technology.  EDF will inform its governing authorities of the project and will, of course, make every effort to respect all the consultation procedures before construction begins in 2012.
