Santee Cooper's board met Tuesday to discuss the company's long-deliberated proposal to sell part of its stake in new reactors at the V.C. Summer nuclear plant to Duke Energy.

The Charleston Post and Courier reported that the South Carolina company scheduled a special, two-hour meeting to address the topic. The company was tight-lipped about its deliberations, commenting only that there was not a vote taken and "complicated" negotiations are ongoing.

Earlier in the week, anonymous sources told the Charlotte Business Journal that an agreement had been reached for Duke to buy 20 percent of the project and possibly purchase more later. The next public meeting at which the Santee Cooper board could vote on such a deal is scheduled for Jan. 27.

Two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors are under construction at V.C. Summer near Columbia, S.C. Santee Cooper owns 45 percent of the project, with Scana's South Carolina Electric and Gas holding the rest. Duke first publicly expressed interest in buying a portion of Santee Cooper's share of the project in 2011.
