Demolition wrapped up last week to take down the largest building in the cleanup at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge site.

After five years of work, the DOE announced Thursday the K-25 gaseous diffusion building had come down ahead of schedule. Debris shipments will continue into next year.

Also known as the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, K-25 was built in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project. Housed in the largest building in the world when it was assembled, the facility enriched uranium for weapons and fuel until 1964. According to WBIR News, two of the five gaseous diffusion buildings at Oak Ridge remain.

Contractors involved in the demolition included Bechtel Jacobs and later URS and CH2M Oak Ridge.
