Chubu Electric Power Company announced that they have decided to implement various countermeasures for a potential tsunami hit at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station. These countermeasures are the result of knowledge and experiences gained through the accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of TEPCO caused by the Tohoku-District off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake.

They stated in a press release, that they have confirmed the safety of the plant against tsunami with considering the past tsunami which strongly affected to the site such as Ansei-Tokai and Hoei earthquake.  Also, they have completed Emergency Safety Measures that requested by the Japanese regulators.

The new countermeasures for a tsunami will prevent flooding inside the power station site by installing a 18 meter sea wall.  Furthermore, they will reinforce emergency measures by ensuring cooling function to achieve cold shutdown in a safe and reliable manner even under a Station Black Out (SBO) event and Loss of Sea Water Cooling Function which occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Based on the knowledge from the accident, they will review their disaster prevention management organization including group companies and reinforce their disaster protection management by assuming a multiple type disaster of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster simultaneously.

They have set a target for completing this construction work by December 2012.
