International trade group the World Nuclear Association appointed Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel as the chairman of its board Tuesday. He’ll take over for Exelon COO Chris Crane, who will assume the vice-chairman title.

According to his Cameco biography, Gitzel has held executive positions at the Canada-headquartered mining company since 2007. A lawyer who practiced in Saskatchewan in the early 1990s, he’s since held management positions related to uranium production for 16 years, including as a vice president of Areva’s mining business unit.

Gitzel joins the board as it begins to search for a new director general following the announcement by John Ritch that he would retire this year, according to WNA’s World Nuclear News service. He’s led the organization for more than 10 years after serving as a U.S. ambassador to United Nations organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency.
