BROKK and AREVA CANBERRA demonstrate safe remote radiation measurement and survey capabilities at recent Waste Management 2009 show

 – By Stephen Heiser –

When used together, industry leading AREVA CANBERRA radiation detection instruments and BROKK remotely controlled machines allow comprehensive, cost effective radiation surveys to be carried out safely and remotely in hazardous environments. This integration enables the remote deployment of a variety of AREVA CANBERRA radiation detectors and measurement systems, ranging from hand held instruments to larger shielded detection systems weighing several hundred pounds or more.

The smallest of the BROKK range of mobile remotely operated machines can be deployed through access holes as small as 2’ x 3’ and offer a typical “in position” working radius greater than 8’. The largest systems have a standard working radius of greater than 25’ and can deploy equipment weighing over 1,600 Lbs at full extension.
AREVA CANBERRA offers a variety of AREVA CANBERRA Smart Probes (CSPTM) with CSP-COM wireless interfaces which can be used for remote survey applications. The Falcon 5000 provides the capability of performing germanium spectroscopy remotely using built in Wi-Fi transmission capabilities. All of these instruments can be easily mated with robotic machines such as the BROKK devices to provide remote detection capabilities.

“The BROKK machines provide an ideal platform for deploying AREVA CANBERRA instruments in hazardous environments. They are easy to control and operate and can provide the flexibility of operation needed for these applications.” said Bruce Gillespie of CANBERRA.

“The comprehensive range of AREVA CANBERRA instruments ensure that measurements and surveys can be completed accurately and in complete safety in the most hazardous operating environments. This unique integration provides safe, reliable and cost-effective measurement options for customers worldwide” added Tony Marlow of BROKK.
