Operators shut down unit 2 at FirstEnergy's Beaver Valley nuclear plant this week after encountering an issue with a pump during startup.

According to a report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the unit had reached 17 percent power at 8:35 a.m., Tuesday. At that point, water levels in a steam generator began to oscillate following the startup of a condensate pump. Systems performed as designed during the shutdown, which involved a manual main steam line isolation to limit the cool down of the reactor coolant system.

Unit 2 had entered a routine refueling outage April 19 and was still offline as of Wednesday morning. The 904 megawatt Westinghouse reactor is located in Shippingport, Pa., and was first licensed in 1987.
