Eskom has announced a deal with Areva to replace six steam generators at South Africa's Koeberg nuclear plant.
The project is part of broader plans to expand the plant's life from 30 to 40 years. In a release, Eskom reported the replacement will take place during a 2018 maintenance outage. The board of the state-controlled utility announced the contract award Friday following consultation with third-party advisers. They did not announce the project's cost or other details about the deal.
Areva (formerly Framatome) built the twin reactors at Koeberg, north of Cape Town, completing them in 1984 and 1985. According to the World Nuclear Association, the pressurized water reactors are of a design similar to many operating in France. Both generate about 930 megawatts.
