AREVA announced delivery of a replacement reactor vessel closure head to First Energy Nuclear Operating Company’s (FENOC) Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

AREVA has manufactured and delivered 18 replacement reactor vessel closure heads for the U.S. nuclear industry since 2003. These new high quality products are supporting safe and reliable plant performance and delivering low cost electricity to Americans every day, and they soon will be “made in America.”

This replacement closure head was produced at an AREVA facility similar to the one being built with Northrop Grumman in Newport News, Va. When complete, AREVA Newport News will be the only U.S. facility capable of manufacturing both small reactor components and the much larger Generation III+ heavy components.

Arriving at the Port of Cleveland on Nov. 22, the new Davis-Besse head completed a 200-mile road journey which included secondary and interstate roadways to the plant. Several U.S. companies specializing in heavy component transportation assisted with the move.

After AREVA’s successful nozzle repair work at Davis Besse this summer, the FENOC and AREVA team cooperated closely to deliver the replacement closure head for installation in 2011.

“We are pleased with the successful completion of our first major milestone on the Davis-Besse reactor vessel closure head replacement project. It represents performance excellence and is another example of the great working relationship and teamwork that exist between FENOC and AREVA,” said Mike Rencheck, Chief Operating Officer of AREVA Inc.
