According to news reports, the work on Romania's largest investment project, Units 3 and 4 at the Cernavoda Nuclear Plant are likely to start in 2012, two years later than originally scheduled.
The reason behind this postponement is to allow more time to clarify scope of work for each group. The agreement was signed two years ago.
The tender organized by Nuclearelectrica, the representative of the state controlling 60.15% in the project company, EnergoNuclear, to attract bids for engineering, design and construction works, did not fall into line with the initially announced deadlines, either, so that these were extended by around one month, to January 17.
The power plant was designed in Canada by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in the 1980s, during the Communist era. The initial plan was to build five units.
Units 1 and 2 are currently fully operational. Three more partially-completed CANDU reactors exist on the same site, part of a project discontinued at the close of the Nicolae Ceauşescu regime.
