The South Texas Project was honored today as one of 12 companies nationally to be named to the 2010 list of America's Safest Companies. STP becomes the nation's first commercial nuclear facility to be recognized in the eight-year history of the award. The award is presented by EHS Today – a national publication dedicated to the management of risk in the workplace and environment.
"Safety is a core value and our top priority, each and every day," said Ed Halpin, STP Nuclear Operating Company President and CEO. "We are very proud and honored to receive this award. The 1,200 men and women who make up our team at STP maintain an uncompromising commitment to safety. This award and the achievements that led to it are the direct result of their focus and commitment to safety."
The award was announced today at an industry safety conference in San Diego. STP becomes one of just 12 companies to receive the recognition this year and among only 120 that have earned the honor since it was initiated in 2002.
This year's list of honorees includes Adolfson & Peterson Construction, Armstrong World Industries Inc., Cummins Inc., Dow Corning Corp., Flowserve Corp., Hannay Reels Inc., Jordan Construction, Lockheed Martin Corp. – Missiles and Fire Control, Lydig Construction, Milliken & Co., Safeway Services LLC and STP Nuclear Operating Company.
The award is given to companies that make safety an integral part of their corporate culture and whose safety performance exceeds their industry average. Honorees are selected by the editors of EHS Today magazine.
In June of this year, STP surpassed 12 million labor-hours, representing more than 34 months, without a lost-time or restricted duty accident. The two-unit facility – one of the nation's largest nuclear power plants – also safely completed its fourth consecutive injury-free refueling outage in May.
In February 2009, STP reached a Total Industrial Safety Accident rate of zero for the past 18 months, ranking the facility in the top 10 percent of all U.S. nuclear plants in personal safety. "Our employees work hard each day to safely and reliably meet the growing energy needs of our state," said Halpin. "The foundation of our success is our strong collaborative culture and commitment to safety in every decision we make."
The plant is managed by the STP Nuclear Operating Company and owned by Austin Energy, CPS Energy and NRG Texas. STP's twin reactors produce 2,700 megawatts of carbon free electricity, enough to power two million homes.
