With this funding, Ohio will continue to accelerate its efforts in growing the nuclear intellectual capital of our nation’s workforce, already one of the finest in the world,” Sen. Voinovich said. “It is critical that we develop the skills and resources needed to support a growing nuclear renaissance to meet our country’s needs for clean domestic energy

U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio), a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW), has announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has made several funding awards to The Ohio State University.
“With this funding, Ohio will continue to accelerate its efforts in growing the nuclear intellectual capital of our nation’s workforce, already one of the finest in the world,” Sen. Voinovich said. “It is critical that we develop the skills and resources needed to support a growing nuclear renaissance to meet our country’s needs for clean domestic energy.”
The funding awarded to The Ohio State University:
• $200,000 for Minor Reactor Upgrades to the school’s research reactor heat removal system and to construct a cryogenic irradiation facility.
• $275,000 for General Scientific Infrastructure.
• Ten Scholarship Awards of $5,000 per year.
• Two Fellowship Awards of $150,000 over three years.
DOE funding helps support education for the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers, and helps strengthen nuclear research and education capabilities at universities and colleges across the United States. Through its Nuclear Energy University Program, DOE is providing millions in scholarships and fellowships to U.S. nuclear science and engineering students, and additional funding to U.S. universities and colleges to purchase new equipment or to upgrade their research reactors.
As former-Chairman and Ranking Member, and current EPW Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee member, Sen. Voinovich is committed to the safe and secure growth of nuclear power. The senator believes that without nuclear power we will not be able to reach our goal of reducing carbon emissions or provide the base-load electricity our growing country demands – and we will miss an amazing opportunity to strengthen our U.S. manufacturing base and create good paying jobs.
At a time when we are struggling to regain our economic footing, the domestic manufacturing industry has an incredible opportunity when it comes to nuclear energy, which offers thousands of well-paying jobs in all stages of development and production. Sen. Voinovich, along with Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), recently led a bipartisan congressional letter to President Obama requesting that the White House join them in hosting a nuclear energy summit to bring together key leaders, stakeholders and innovators to discuss and plan for America’s nuclear energy future.
