The Shaw Group Inc. and its client, the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole, LLC, recently were awarded the 2009 Phoenix Award for brownfield redevelopment of the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole, located in Annapolis, Md.
The prestigious award, given by the Phoenix Awards Institute, Inc., recognizes environmental and community revitalization projects from each of the 10 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions that are working to redevelop formerly used real estate properties. The project was selected as the award winner for the EPA Region III, which spans the mid-Atlantic states and includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
The center previously was the location of one of the largest dry cleaner chemical spills in Maryland’s history. The scope of Shaw’s responsibilities on the project included remediation of these chemicals from the soil and groundwater as part of the site’s redevelopment.
Today, the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole is a new, two-million-square-foot mixed-use development that includes retailers, restaurants and luxury condominiums.
“Environmental remediation is a critical component of brownfield redevelopment. Without ensuring the safety of soil and groundwater elements, sites such as the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole could not be revitalized into the positive spaces they are today,” said George Bevan, president of Shaw’s Environmental & Infrastructure Group. “We are honored to be recognized for this project, as it validates our commitment to achieving higher standards of excellence for our clients, the community and the environment.”
