Energetics Incorporated, a wholly owned subsidiary of VSE Corporation, has reported that the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is hosting a delegation from Lithuania on a visit to Washington, D.C.

The delegation will encourage partnerships with U.S. businesses that can participate in and support Lithuania’s civil nuclear power development plans.

The delegation is led by the Ministry of Energy and is comprised of senior leaders from Lithuania’s Parliament, the National Control Commission for Prices and Energy, VATESI (Lithuania’s nuclear regulator), and the operator of the New Nuclear Power Plant Project.

Last month Russia invited its European neighbours a stake in the construction of a nuclear power facility in its Kaliningrad region, an enclave wedged between Poland and Lithuania. Moscow offered Poland, Lithuania and Germany a stake of up to 49 percent in the plant to be built in Neman, about 15 kilometers from the Russian-Lithuanian border.

The planned 2,300-megawatt facility is to cost an estimated €4.7 billion and is expected to go onstream in 2015 and Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom promises the electricity it produces will be cheaper than energy generated from coal and gas.

As part of the visit, USTDA is sponsoring a Business Briefing on November 10, 2009, for U.S. companies to learn more about Lithuania’s construction plans, investment opportunities, and regulatory framework for civil nuclear energy. U.S. companies with expertise in the commercial nuclear power industry are invited to participate in this one-day business briefing to:

  • Meet with senior decision makers from Lithuania who are directly involved in the development of this growing sector.
  • Network with U.S. industry and U.S. government stakeholders who are interested in the sector.
  • Learn more about Lithuania’s nuclear energy program.
  • Learn about USTDA's funding programs.
  • Attend one-on-one meetings with the delegates.
