Nuclear facility now operating safely at full power
– By Christopher Smith –
Unit 2, one of two reactors, has safely been restored to operation at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. PG&E's Diablo Canyon Power Plant was down after operators took it off-line last week.
Diablo's Unit 2 was shut down last week after a fuse failed and caused a loss of power. Plant personnel made the necessary repairs and successfully tested the system prior to bringing the unit back online. PG&E officials said the shutdown never posed any public safety hazard and the plant's other reactor is operating at full power.
The 2,240 MW Diablo Canyon station is located in Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County, about 195 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The station has two units, 1,122 MW Unit 1 and the 1,118 MW Unit 2, which entered service in 1985 and 1986. The facility's two units together produce enough electricity to power more than 3,000,000 homes in central and northern California.
