Company is heavily invested in safety initiatives

 – By April Murelio –

Canada's Bruce Power has announced that the utility's nuclear power unit 6 at the Bruce B generating station has been taken offline to perform maintenance on a heat transport pump cooler. Units 3, 4, 5 and 7 remain at high power. Unit 8 is offline for its scheduled maintenance program

Bruce Power’s number one value is “Safety First.” Since its inception, the company has and continues to measure itself against world-class standards.  Knowing that safety and commercial success go hand in hand, Bruce Power strives not only to ensure the nuclear safety of its generating stations, but the safety of its
employees and the surrounding communities in which they live.

To that end, Bruce Power has adopted a number of safety initiatives that include:
· The introduction of the Safety Supervisory Board. This board, which operates independently of the operations, reports to the CEO and is responsible for monitoring safety performance. Comprised of independent members as well as senior staff, the Safety Supervisory Board ensures the focus and sponsorship is at the highest level in the organization
· Target Zero, an employee-driven initiative developed by a coalition of management and union representatives to achieve zero industrial accidents or occupational illnesses on site
· The implementation of the International Safety Rating System. In 2002, following its first audit of its safety management systems by the Industrial Accident Prevention Association, Bruce Power achieved a Level 7 ranking on the system’s 10-point scale, surpassing its first-year target of Level 5. In 2003 Bruce Power achieved a Level 8 ranking.
· Becoming ISO 14001 registered, a mark of distinction among international environmental management standards
· The encouragement of staff at all levels to become involved in safety initiatives that reach all aspects of the business process, including participation in the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
