Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Ed Miliband explained that the nuclear power sector holds benefits for businesses across the country, and for individuals looking for employment in UK jobs.
"Nuclear power is part of the low-carbon future for Britain," he went on to say.
"It also has the potential to offer thousands of jobs to the UK and multi-million pound opportunities to British businesses."
His comments come as the government has opened a consultation period on proposals for 11 new sites which are potential sites for the construction of nuclear power stations in the coming years.
In the formation of this shortlist, the DECC took into account the credibility of these locations as possible sites, as well as the likelihood that facilities could be operational by 2025.
The DECC explains that, of the ten existing nuclear facilities in the UK, nine are expected to close by 2025 due to their reaching the end of their initial intended lifecycle.
