Electricte de France's UniStar Nuclear Energy has asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for more time to submit a Facility Safety Assessment Report for the proposed third reactor at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, Md.

An extension would allow UniStar to file a report “in an orderly and efficient manner without undue expenditure of resources after the combined license aplication has been updated to reflect the most current revision to the U.S. EPR (European Pressurized Reactor),” the company said in a regulatory filing dated Dec. 31, 2014.

The two-unit NPP operated by Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Inc. is 40 miles south of Annapolis, Md. The proposed third unit at the facility, which calls for a 1,600 megawatt capacity reactor, was submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2008.

UniStar said it would commit to “a new schedule for submission of the next updated CCNPP Unit 3 FSAR in calendar year 2015.” A delay in the report “will not present any undue risk to public health or safety.” It was also “consistent with the common defense and security,” the company said.

It was also “authorized by law,” UniStar said, although an exemption is required for the extension to be granted, The BayNet.com reported.

The long-delayed project has been subjected to shifts in ownership. It was originally proposed by a joint venture of Constellation Energy Group and EDF. But Constellation has since merged with Exelon Generation and in 2010, EDF purchased UniStar outright. Exelon Generation, now operates the facility under Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Inc.
