Westinghouse Electric Company said Wednesday it had been contracted by energy companies RWE and E.ON to supply the Gundremmingen and Emsland Nuclear Power Plants in Germany with fuel assemblies between 2016 and 2018.
The contract calls for two deliveries for each plant and includes an option for two more deliveries for each in future years, Westinghouse said.
The Westinghouse facility in Vasteras, Sweden, will manufacture the fuel assemblies.
The Emsland nuclear plant is a single PWR that went operational in 1988 and is scheduled for shut down at the end of 2022, when the government expects to phase out all nuclear power in the country.
Units B and C at the Gundremmingen nuclear plant have been operational since 1984. Unit B is expected to be shut down in 2017 and Unit C in 2021.
Westinghouse is a single-source nuclear fuel provider for pressurized water, boiling water and advanced gas-cooled reactors. The company is currently fueling 145 PWR and BWR plants through operations at 10 fuel manufacturing facilities.
In Europe, the company manufactures fuel assemblies at two locations, the Springfields Fuels Limited facility in Preston, Lancashire, U.K. and Westinghouse Electric Sweden in Vasteras.
Gundremmingen in southern Germany is operated by Kernkraftwerk Gundremmingen, which is owned 75 percent by RWE and 25 percent by E.ON.
The Emsland unit in northwestern Germany is operated by Kernkraftwerke Lippe-Ems GmbH, which is owned 87.5 percent by RWE and 12.5 percent by E.ON.
