Algeria has picked a target date for operation of its first nuclear power plant, drawing a line in the sand at 2029.

Local radio in Algiers reported that Energy Minister Youcef Yousfi commented on Algeria's target date on Sunday during a press conference in Oran that was part of an International Conference of [the] Gas Industry.

ShanghaiDaily.com noted that Algeria has cooperation agreements in place with several major players in the industry, including Russia, China, Argentina and the United States.

Yousfi said Algeria cannot ignore nuclear power as a “capital energy industry … devoted to our energy efficiency and our economic development.”

Algeria's aim is to invest in nuclear technology and in “the field of human expertise” to advance its nuclear power ambitions, Yousfi said.
