Researchers in Finland and North Carolina have developed a technique that allows near-real-time monitoring of concrete deterioration that could potentially be used for containers holding nuclear material.

The technology developed at the University of Eastern Finland and North Carolina State University makes use of an electrically conductive paint. Covering a structure's surface, it functions as a sensor that can help the system detect damage or flaws as they develop, Finnish news agency Yle reported.

To date, researchers have used the system effectively on concrete beams less than three feet wide. Further testing is planned; and commercial applications could include monitoring of new and existing structural concrete in civil infrastructure and nuclear facilities.
