A Canadian standards organization recently finalized a new, comprehensive set of standards for civilian nuclear emergency management programs.

The CSA Group developed the N1600 standard in response to a recommendation by the Fukushima Task Force of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to create a dedicated document on the subject. Built on existing regulations and standards, it provides guidelines for both on-site and off-site organizations in the development and implementation of emergency programs. The new standard can be applied to certain other civilian nuclear facilities beyond power reactors, but does not apply to uranium mining operations. It does not duplicate or replace the existing CSA N286 standard, which covers management at nuclear plants.

A committee is scheduled to begin working on the first update to the new standard in September. Organizations that intend to implement CSA N1600 can find more information here.
