Babcock & Wilcox will undertake as much as $1.3 billion in work for the Navy's nuclear propulsion program under a contract announced Tuesday.

B&W is the U.S. military's longtime provider of reactors and fuel services for submarines and nuclear-powered ships. Its latest contract involves the fabrication of components and power systems, with $508 million assigned for work that will begin immediately. The contract then calls for multiple option periods through 2016.

The order was issued to B&W's Nuclear Operations Group subsidiary and will be filled by the company's facilities in Virginia, Indiana and Ohio. According to the company's website, the Barberton, Ohio, and Mount Vernon, Ind., sites specialize in N-Stamp accredited heavy component manufacturing. The Euclid, Ohio, and Lynchburg, Va., plants design and supply components specifically for government programs, with the latter licensed to process highly enriched uranium.
