The head of Czech state-controlled utility CEZ has said bid selection for a project to build new reactors at the Temelin nuclear plant will be pushed back to the second quarter of 2015.
CEZ Chairman Daniel Benes told a Czech business publication that the start of construction is now expected in 2019, compared to earlier estimates of 2016 or 2017. Power production at the two new units would start between 2026 and 2028.
Radio Praha noted the project also hinges on uncertain political support as the country prepares for an election in May. CEZ will require a power-price guarantee from the government before investing in the reactors. Meanwhile, Westinghouse and a consortium led by Rosatom recently completed their bids for the project and are awaiting CEZ's decision.
