Construction at Georgia's Vogtle nuclear plant reached another milestone this week with the completion of the concrete foundation for unit 4.
Southern Co. announced Thursday that it had completed the 7,000-cubic-yard basemat, where the CR10 cradle and the containment vessel bottom head for the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor will be placed as soon as the concrete cures. Pouring the concrete took 500 craft workers 41 continuous hours – comparable to the basemat pour for unit 3 in March.
"As we reach the midpoint in the historic construction of units 3 and 4, the visible progress at the site is setting the stage for a secure energy future for Georgia and the rest of the country," Buzz Miller, Georgia Power's head of nuclear construction, said in a release. "The success today exemplifies the strong coordination as one team consisting of Georgia Power, Southern Nuclear, Westinghouse and CB&I. The efficiencies across the project are evident as we achieve significant milestones, which boost the local economy and will bring value to Georgia Power customers for decades."
