Missouri's Callaway nuclear plant will remain offline for several days after a small fire in its turbine hall last weekend.

The incident caused both the turbine and the reactor to trip, according to a report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the plant declared an unusual event just before midnight Friday. Workers quickly extinguished the fire, and the plant cancelled the emergency declaration about an hour later. According to the report, the flames were more than 50 feet from any safety-related equipment.

An Ameren executive told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that insulation ignited after a short in cables connecting the plant to the grid. The NRC report listed the location of the fire as the phase B generator bus duct. While it did not lay out a definitive schedule, Ameren expects repairs and inspections will last several days before the plant returns to service.
