Westinghouse announced another agreement with Vitkovice Power Engineering Thursday related to a bid to build new AP1000 reactors in the Czech Republic.
The AP1000 is constructed from a number of modules manufactured both on and off site. In a demonstration project to be completed in 2014, Vitkovice will manufacture a cutaway section of a portion of the AP1000's CA-20 module, used for spent fuel storage. The Czech company earlier reached an agreement to fabricate structural and mechanical equipment for new units at CEZ's Temelin nuclear plant, should Westinghouse have the winning bid. In a release, Westinghouse said the demonstration project will help Vitkovice become familiar with the Pennsylvania-based Toshiba subsidiary's technical and quality requirements. Westinghouse did not announce the terms or cost of the mockup contract.
CEZ hopes to choose a reactor technology by the end of the year for the $10 billion to $15 billion project. It is also considering a bid by a Rosatom-led consortium.
