The Tennessee Valley Authority has hired Exelon executive Joseph P. Grimes as its new chief nuclear officer.

In an announcement Tuesday, the federal utility said he will replace current CNO Preston Swafford, who will retire. Grimes will join TVA's office in Chattanooga, Tenn., after working as Exelon Nuclear's senior vice president of engineering and technical services.

A senior reactor operator, Grimes has spent more than 30 years in the nuclear industry, including management positions at Exelon's Peach Bottom and Limerick plants, according to his LinkedIn profile. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University and attended executive management programs at Northwestern University and St. Joseph University. In his new position, Grimes will be responsible for TVA's fleet of six operational reactors at Browns Ferry, Sequoyah and Watts Bar.
