EDF, one of the largest utilities in Europe, will equip its French nuclear plants with American software that can prevent problems by detecting subtle changes in equipment behavior.

Chicago-based InStep Software announced Thursday that EDF will purchase its PRiSM product for continuous, real-time monitoring at 58 reactors. The company did not announce the terms of the contract. EDF has used the system since 2008 in other facilities and power plants.

According to InStep, the system uses algorithms that can alert plant personnel to early warning signs of equipment problems prior to failure. In the U.S., InStep's utility customers include Exelon, Southern Co., Florida Power and Light, Minnesota Power, Southern California Edison, Progress Energy and Pacific Gas & Electric.
