As expected following its final shutdown May 7, the Kewaunee nuclear plant laid off 202 workers Friday as a clearer picture emerged of the schedule for cutting the plant's remaining workforce.
A state notification obtained by the Green Bay Press Gazette anticipates another 56 layoffs some time after June 29, another 46 at the end of July and 31 through the rest of this year. The largest number of workers will be dismissed next year, when 293 jobs will disappear at the end of September.
Security staff will remain at the site as it enters SAFSTOR, as will a handful of maintenance personnel. Dominion decided to shut the plant down after a failed attempt to sell it amid low wholesale power prices, an absence of other Dominion reactors nearby and competition from natural gas and renewables. About 630 worked there before its closure.
