On Friday, Areva announced the formation of a consortium that will compete for the oversight of Magnox Ltd. and Research Sites Restoration Ltd. (RSRL) in the UK.
Britain's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is seeking firms to take over the so-called parent body organizations for both companies. RSRL oversees the closure of nuclear research sites at Harwell and Winfirth. Magnox currently operates two nuclear power plants and is responsible for the decommissioning of eight others. Utah-based EnergySolutions holds the Magnox contract through mid-2014. While in July EnergySolutions announced plans to sell its European business, that subsidiary has announced it will still pursue the Magnox contract beyond 2014.
Its competition will include the new consortium, called CAS Restoration, formed by Areva, CH2M Hill and Serco.
In a release, Dominique Mockly, an Areva vice president, said "Areva is determined, together with its highly experienced partners, to provide NDA with the very best services, based on our substantial experience in operation and decommissioning of major nuclear sites such as Marcoule (France), Hanford (United States) and Sellafield (United Kingdom)."
